OverviewGreen Soapstones Ganesha Budha Statue 35cm
Ganesha or (Ganesh) is the elephant headed god in Hinduism. He is the son of Shiva and Parvati.
Ganesha is a very popular god of the Hindus. Hindu tradition states that Ganesha is a god of wisdom, success and good luck. He is also a giver of various favors. Hindu tradition calls Ganesha as Vighneshvara. "Vighneshvara" in Sanskrit means someone who is the lord of obstacles or difficulties. Thus, the Hindu tradition states that by worshiping Ganesha, one can eliminate all obstacles and problems.
His worship
There are not many temples (mandirs) of Ganesha, but in many Hindu temples there are statues and carvings. But in most of the Hindu temples, people worship Ganesha along with other gods and goddesses. Hindu tradition gives Ganesha an important place. Tradition says that Hindus must worship their religious functions and ceremonies, for he is the god of all obstacles. In general, many Hindus also worship Ganesha before starting a new thing. For example, for occupying a new home, they can serve Ganesha. Even before starting a new business, many Hindus can worship Ganesha.
Mythology
There are two mythological stories about Ganesha.
One story says that Parvati made a boy out of the dirt on her body. The boy got dirty alive. This boy is guarding the way while Parvati was taking a bath. Shiva wanted to meet his wife Parvati. The boy did not allow him. Shiva got angry. He cut the boy's head. Then, an elephant's head was determined to make the boy alive again. Therefore, Ganesha has an elephant's head.
The other story is this. Parvati was very proud of her son Ganesha. She asked Shani (planet Saturn) to look at her son. Shani looked at Ganesha's face. Shani look burned Ganesha's face and he became headless. Dan Brahma (the creator god of the Hindus) advised Parvati to solve the first head of everything she could find. Parvati found an elephant head. This head she fixed on the body of Ganesha. Thus, Ganesha became an elephant's head.
Ganesha had a race with his brother Kartikeya, the first to go around the world would be the winner. So Kartikeya drove the next day, but Ganesha stayed and thought about how he could win. Eventually he sat on his horse, a rat, and went to his parents seven times (representing the entire world in Hindu scriptures). Thus Ganesha was declared the winner because of his intelligence.
