EFFECTS

Catmint is a traditional remedy for the flu and cold. It acts as a sweat repellent for fever, especially acute bronchitis. It is also antispasmodic and therefore suitable when the stomach is upset, with poor digestion, bloating and colic. In addition, it is the perfect remedy for diarrhea in children. Its calming effect on the nerves is added to the other relaxing properties the herb has. Also, many users note that in a strong tea, catmint induces a light high like marijuana and has a stimulating effect on the imagination, it has a hallucinatory effect and can be hypnotic.

It is possible to get very mild poisoning if you mix catmint with an equal part of tobacco and then smoke it. The euphoric feeling this produces is clearly less than that of marijhuana. But it is possible that this is mainly due to the increased toxic effect of nicotine in tobacco in this way.

Research at Iowa State University has shown that the oil extract of Nepeta cataria, which contains nepetalactone, is ten times more effective at repelling mosquitoes than the dedicated DEET.

Catmint was also used for years in Asian zoos to calm lions and tigers.

MEDICAL USE
The flowering tops are partly used in medicine and are harvested when the plant is in full bloom, in August. The medical qualities of this plant include: carminative, diaphoretic, cooling, mild stimulant, antispasmodic and menstrual pain relieving. Painful swelling may diminish when applied as a compress.

VARIATIONS
The two species to which catmint is related, Nepeta faassenii and Nepeta grandiflora, also attract cats.

USE
Pour boiling water into a cup with 2 teaspoons of dried herb and let it steep for 10-15 minutes. This can be drunk three times in a day.

Catmint can also be taken as a decoction, injection or processed in a joint, possibly with other herbs.

WARNINGS
Catmint is safe, but avoid excessive use to prevent vomiting or diarrhea. Women who are pregnant or have pelvic inflammatory disease should not take catmint orally.
