WHAT IS KOLANOOT?
Kolanoot powder Colanoot is the seed core of a large African tree that is commercially grown in many places around the world, especially in Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Brazil and other parts of South America. The nuts are very popular among the inhabitants of these countries as a caffeine-containing stimulant. They are all eaten or powdered and mixed with a liquid to drink. Colan nut is still an ingredient in Coca Cola.

Geschiedenis
Kolanoot has been used in traditional medicine as an aphrodisiac, to counteract hunger feelings, to treat morning sickness, migraine, headache and indigestion. It is also applied directly to the skin in wounds and burns. The bitter twigs of the tree were also used, namely to keep the teeth and gums clean.
Centuries ago, the Arabs traded gold powder for carbon nuts just before they made a long Sahara trek. For a long time now, the coalnut plays a central role in many African societies, and that is still the case. They serve as a dowry, and they symbolize hospitality. A visitor is always offered carbon nuts.
Today, the seeds are still widely used as spice by the indigenous inhabitants of Western and Central tropical Africa, and also by the people of "West Indies" and Brazil, who also introduced the trees here. Cola acuminata, or Gurrunots, were used in the same way as carbon nuts; They come from a tree that grows in Cameroon and Congo, they are considered less tall but mostly used as a caffeine stimulant.

PLANTKUNDIG

Cola nitida belongs to the Sterculiaceae; Tribus Sterculiae, subtribus Sterculiinae. It is an evergreen tree with shiny leaves, purple-striped flowers and star-shaped fruits. The tree can grow 25 meters high and increases itself via seeds. Cola nitida and Cola acuminata are soon confused with other Cola species (such as Cola vera, which is then most suitable for medicinal use). In western Africa, these trees are mainly found at the coast, and a lively trade is created among the inhabitants of the interior. A small piece can be chewed for each meal to promote digestion; It is also believed that it improves the taste of everything that is then eaten and possibly even makes waste water drinkable.

CHEMISTRY
The main ingredients are caffeine, theobromine, tannins and phenols, including d-catechin, 1-epicatechin, colatin, and kolanine. It also contains phlobaphenes, the anthocyanin pigment cola red, betaine, protein and starch.

EFFECTEN
In Africa and the American tropics, the nuts are chewed to prevent fatigue and hunger. Colanots have a bitter taste in the first place, and are then sweet and also make any food or drink sweet that is then taken. The properties of cola are the same as those of caffeine; they only change according to the binders present. Fresh carbon nuts have a stimulating effect that is separate from the caffeine they contain, but when they appeared on the European market, they were seen as indistinguishable from other caffeine and cola red.

MEDICAL USE
Kola has a stimulating effect on human consciousness. In short, it can be used in a state of weakness. It can also be used for diarrhea caused by stress. It can also help with mild depression and in some people this can even lead to a state of euphoria. Because it contains caffeine, it can relieve migraine or headache. The phenols and anthrocynin also have an antioxidant effect.
Historical use of carbon nuts also includes increasing the capacity for physical effort and for tolerating fatigue without food; stimulating a weak heart and treating nerve weakness, lethargy, lack of emotions, tension diarrhea, depression, despondency, peaking, anxiety and seasickness.

VARIANT
In addition to the nuts, whole or powdered, cola nut is also available as extract and odor oil.
