This new species stems from two highly valued parents; Juanita la Lagrimosa (Spanish for 'Juanita de Betraande') and Royal Highness, which are themselves genetic hybrids of other modified species: Juanita la Lagrimosa from Queen Mother and a Mexican-Afghan mix; Royal Highness of Dance Hall and Respect 13. These species go back to the agricultural era; each new variety with its own unique scent, taste, color, high and medical use. Over the past decade, the goal of all this modification, what some producers called "Royal Respect," was to optimize marijuana for benefits to the body and mind.

Painkiller XL stands out for the almost equal amounts of 9 percent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and 9 percent cannabidiol (CBD), achieved by seeds that are 75 percent Sativa and 25 percent Indica.
