Overview

Rapé (pronounced ha-pay) is a snuff originally used by Brazilian indigenous tribes. There are different variants with various herbs. The main ingredient, however, is always finely ground tobacco leaf, namely the very strong variant Nicotiana Rustica. This contains a high nicotine content. Because nicotine has a stimulating effect, a sniff of rapé has a stimulating effect.

The tobacco plant is sacred to members of the Brazilian indigenous tribes. It is almost always snorted in powder form. Sometimes the tobacco is soaked in water, after which they snort the tobacco water. Tobacco smoking, on the other hand, is something they rarely do in the Amazon. Some other spices that can be found in rapé are cinnamon, camphor, mint, tonka beans, banana peel, passion flower and clover. Sometimes rapé also contains psychoactive plants. Azarius offers a number of authentic blends, composed with our own favorite herbs.

Rapé has recently become more popular in the Netherlands. It is offered through various online outlets. Because of its slightly stimulating effect, it is sometimes used as a recreational agent. In addition, rapé ceremonies are increasingly being offered in the Netherlands. This article takes a closer look at this increasingly popular drug. History, use, dosage and risks are discussed. In addition, extensive attention is paid to the various blends of Azarius, each with their unique effect.

HISTORY
The use of rapé is synchronized with the discovery of tobacco. The people of the Americas were the first to inhale, chew, and drink the tobacco plant. This use goes back at least 5000 years.

With the rediscovery of America under Columbus' leadership, Europe first came into contact with tobacco and therefore also with rapé more than 500 years ago. The Franciscan monk Friar Ramón Pané, who returned with Columbus in 1493, was the one who took rapé to Europe. The oldest European documentation of the use of this drug dates back to 1723. At the time, it was described on paper how the Inca used rapé against different types of respiratory diseases and "purifying" the head. In addition, you can read how the Incas used the means for all kinds of different ceremonies. Rapé was also consumed to make inner journeys or to evoke visions. Furthermore, it was also a means that could take away bad energies. It was also used as a social recreational tool, like we use coffee.

Rapé, however, was only introduced to the Dutch nightlife scene a few years ago. For a few years now, there has been a trend within a particular trend of nightlife where people want to live more purely, consciously and healthily, but at the same time also want to enjoy themselves. Things like raw cocoa, coca powder, and rapé are healthier alternatives to hard drugs. This is therefore eagerly used. The popularity of rapé within this so-called health community is increasing for the same reason.

HOW IS RAPÉ MADE
The strong tobacco Nicotiana Rustica is chopped into very fine pieces and kept over the fire to dry. Then it is pulverized. Originally, a rosewood pestle is used for pulverizing, which gives the rapé a sweet taste. The commercially available snuffs may not be ground with such a pestle and therefore lack this authentic taste. After grinding, it is sieved and ground again. This process is repeated until a very fine powder is formed that can be sniffed.

Rapé contains nicotine. Because rapé is not intended for smoking, and also contains no chemical additives (which is the case with cigarettes), it is much less harmful to the body. It is also less addictive, because it is partly the chemical additives that make cigarettes highly addictive and unhealthy.

RAPÉ RITUAL
During a rapé ritual - which is completely independent and in which nothing other than rapé is used - it is first determined who needs which blend. After all, everyone has their own needs. The ceremony leader tunes in and is told who can use which type of rapé. Then everyone expresses their intention: "For what purpose are you following the ceremony? What do you want to get an answer to? "After this, the ceremony leader blows his personal rapé blend in the nose of each participant.

The use of rapé results in a strong stimulation of the mucous membranes, which is also experienced as a blow. This intense blow causes the mind to open, allowing the biased intentions to do its work. In addition, rapé helps to let go of emotional, physical and mental illnesses. This releases negative energies and confusion. Shamans use rapé to retune to them

Holy Spirit.

Tobacco also contains two alkaloids: harman and norharman. These are closely related to the substances harmine and harmaline, which are found in ayahuasca. Tobacco therefore enhances the effect of ayahuasca. For that reason, both remedies are inextricably linked during such ayahuasca rituals. Rapé is also often combined with other shamanic ceremonies, such as a kambo or sweat lodge ritual.

TYPES OF RAPÉ
There are endless types of rapé. Azarius offers the following mixes:

Bobinsana-Rapé gives a warm, empathetic feeling. It can also induce lucid dreaming.

Caapi rapé creates a dreamy, trance effect. Caapi is an ingredient of the ayahuasca mixture. As explained earlier, both plants reinforce each other due to the similarity in the alkaloids. Caapi rapé is therefore a very strong blend.

Matico-rapé contains ashes from Cecropia and Matico. Due to its antibacterial properties, matico is used in the Amazon to help wounds heal faster. This blend is therefore very suitable for use with respiratory problems. In addition, it is used as a stimulant and aphrodisiac.

Rapé-guayusa is a natural energizer. It gives you an energetic feeling for a long time. For that reason, this blend is ideal for dancing or working with. It is also a means of inducing lucid dreams.

Rapé wildmint has a strong refreshing aroma due to the mint and provides a deep feeling of silence.

Rapé-Guarumo has a calming effect. It also helps you relax and sleep better.

Macambo Passionflower Rapé is a powerful, stimulating formula. It contains finely ground macambo bean, which is closely related to the cocoa bean and smells wonderful. It also increases your serotonin level. Macambo also gives you energy and improves your mood.

Rapé-kanna has a relaxing and socially stimulating effect. After ingestion it has a slightly stimulating effect. After about an hour it has a relaxing effect. Some also experience increased sensitivity to touch and an increase in libido.

BIOCHEMICAL ACTION
The main ingredient of rapé is the strong tobacco Nicotiana Rustica, which contains a high nicotine content of up to 5%. Because it is taken nasally, the nicotine enters the brain directly through the mucous membranes. There it binds to the nicotine receptors, causing more dopamine to be produced. This makes you feel relaxed. In addition, the content of acetylcholine and epinephrine also increases, which increases alertness. [1]

EXPERIENCE
Using rapé will certainly take some getting used to the first time. People who snort another substance more often may be less shocked when they snort rapé for the first time. However, it absolutely hurts the mucous membranes. It looks like you are inhaling a pinch of pepper. Your eyes immediately start to water. For many, this initial experience can be so unpleasant that they refrain from using it further.

Others will experience this intense stimulation as pleasurable because it immediately creates a feeling of heightened alertness. You can also converse more easily and you can experience an increase in your creativity. For many who use rapé regularly, these latter effects increase the pain in the sale.

If you appreciate the effect, you may even begin to associate the pain with something pleasant. Most people don't like coffee or beer the first time either. Still, you can learn to appreciate the taste of these drinks. The same goes for smoking a cigarette; there are only a few who like this right away.

But because our body "learns" that the bitter taste of coffee, the somewhat cowardly taste of beer, and the foul-smelling smoke of a cigarette are an omen of an emerging pleasant effect, it is perceived as tasty in the long run. However, negative taste conditioning can also take place. For example, if you become very ill from a certain product, it may happen that you no longer like it.

Taste, but also feeling, are just signals that indicate something pleasant or unpleasant, and so taste can be learned. In the same way you can learn to appreciate a pain stimulus. As a result, it can happen that the pain that a drug such as rapé gives is eventually experienced as something pleasant, however strange that may sound.

USE
If you're using rapé, you can have someone else blow it in your nose through an elongated hollow tube made of bamboo or bone. A straight tube is called a tepi. It is extremely important that you do not inhale during use. You should therefore stand or sit relaxed and breathe slowly. Don't blow too hard either, because then you will get the rapé in your eyes. If there is a blow, you can therefore choose not to breathe for a while. However, if you take a deep breath, the herbs will get into the lungs and you will find yourself coughing this up. This is unpleasant and should therefore be avoided.

By using a V-shaped tube it is also possible to administer the rapé yourself. This so-called self-blowing applicator is also called a kuripe. You can then place one end in your nose and the other end in your mouth and blow gently. The advantage of self-application is that by blowing in the rapé yourself you cannot inhale, so it almost always goes well.

DOSAGE
Not all rapé mixtures are equally strong, but because it is not pleasant to have your nose full of herbs anyway, you should never use more than the amount of a pea. You can add a little every hour.

MEDICINAL USE
The indigenous people of South Africa use tobacco to help wounds heal more quickly, to treat ulcers and as a repellant against insects. In addition, it is used to combat fatigue, pain, hunger and thirst, increasing stamina. It is also used to clean the airways. Many people notice after sniffing rapé that they can breathe more freely and smell better. There are also special rapé mixtures that are used against the flu, although it mainly concerns the other herbs that fight the flu. At high doses, rapé can cleanse the body by sweating and sometimes even vomiting. In addition, the alkaloids in tobacco have an antidepressant effect and a stimulant effect. [2] [3] [4]

It is also claimed that rapé can restore the pineal gland by descaling it. The pineal gland is responsible for the production of melatonin and thus regulates the wake and sleep rhythm. Also called the third eye, it is located centrally in your brain. Since the pineal gland plays an important role in the central nervous system and can therefore be involved in diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, the nicotine from the tobacco can help to counteract these diseases. However, there is no scientific evidence for this claim. Research is now underway.

It also appears that 90% of the schizophrenic people smoke. They can do this as a form of self-medication. Since rapé is much less harmful than smoking, schizophrenic people can benefit from using the tobacco plant nasally in the form of rapé and thus avoid the harmful use of cigarettes.

ADDICTION
The greatest danger of rapé is nicotine from the tobacco plant. The chance of addiction to this substance is often underestimated. People who have quit smoking for years and start using rapé can still become addicted to nicotine unnoticed, causing cravings for cigarettes. At first you think that you are consuming something completely different from a cigarette. Yet the substance that made you addicted to cigarettes is just as present in rapé. It is not without reason that people like to sniff, even if it has a painful effect on the mucous membranes. In fact, people who use rapé daily in case of deficiency sometimes switch to cigarettes. Therefore, do not underestimate this remedy.

The upside, however, is that rapé is not very harmful - unlike smoking commercially available cigarettes. Conversely, in the same way as nicotine patches, rapé can help you to quit smoking. Instead of smoking, rapé can be used to meet nicotine needs. The advantage over a nicotine patch is that rapé, just like smoking, ensures that you are aware of your breathing during use and that it forms a ritual. These two things are an important part of smoking addiction. A nicotine patch does not take care of this, so that rapé may be even more effective at weaning from cigarettes. Since rapé does not contain any additional addictive chemicals, it is much easier to withdraw from this drug than to quit smoking. By switching from cigarettes to rapé it is therefore easier to quit completely.

KEY LOCK
Rapé is used in the Netherlands as a ceremonial or recreational means. As a medicinal application it is rarely used. However, if you are using it as a recreational agent, you should be aware that there is a potential for addiction. You can become more dependent and even use it daily in the long run. There are already enough cases known of people who have become dependent on rapé. The question is whether this is bad. There are indigenous tribes where rapé is used every day, for example every day after breakfast, to go to work afterwards, or to have a nice chat with each other after dinner. For them, rapé habit is built into their social life. What coffee is to us, rapé is to them. Coffee is also highly addictive, but it is widely accepted due to its low health risks and the benefit of a higher concentration. Maybe the same should be true for rapé.
