Overview

WHAT IS KOLANUTE?
Cola nut powder Cola nut is the seed core of a large African tree that is commercially grown in many places around the world, especially Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Brazil and other parts of South America. The nuts are very popular among the inhabitants of these countries as a caffeine-containing stimulant. They are eaten whole or powdered and mixed with a liquid made into a drink. Kola nut is still an ingredient in Coca Cola.

HISTORY
Kola nut has been used in traditional medicine as an aphrodisiac, to combat hunger pangs, to treat morning sickness, migraines, headaches and indigestion. It is also applied directly to the skin for wounds and burns. The bitter twigs of the tree were also used to keep teeth and gums clean.
Centuries ago, the Arabs traded gold powder for kola nuts just before going on a long trek through the Sahara. The kola nut has long played a central role in many African societies, and it still is today. They serve as a dowry, and they symbolize hospitality. A visitor is always offered kola nuts.
Even today, the seeds are still widely used as a spice by the indigenous people of West and Central tropical Africa, as well as by the people of "West Indies" and Brazil, who also introduced the trees here. Cola acuminata, or Gurru nuts, were used in the same way as cola nuts; they come from a tree that grows in Cameroon and Congo, they are considered less high but mainly used as a caffeine stimulant.

VEGETABLE

Cola nitida belongs to the Sterculiaceae; Tribus Sterculiae, sub-tribus Sterculiinae. It is an evergreen tree with glossy leaves, purple-striped flowers and star-shaped fruits. The tree can reach a height of 25 meters and propagates itself through seeds. Cola nitida and Cola acuminata are easily confused with other types of Cola (such as Cola vera, which is the most suitable for medicinal use). In western Africa, these trees are mainly found near the coast, and a lively trade has developed among the inhabitants of the interior. A small piece can be chewed before each meal to aid digestion; it is also thought to improve the taste of everything eaten afterwards and possibly even make wastewater drinkable.

CHEMISTRY
The main ingredients are caffeine, theobromine, tannins and phenols, including d-catechin, l-epicatechin, kolatin, and kolanine. It also contains phlobaphene, the anthocyanin pigment kola red, betaine, protein and starch.

EFFECTS
In Africa and the American tropics, the nuts are chewed to combat fatigue and hunger. Kola nuts have a bitter taste in the first place, then are sweet and also sweeten any food or drink that is subsequently ingested. Cola's properties are the same as those of caffeine; they only change according to the binders that are present. Fresh kola nuts have a stimulant effect independent of the caffeine they contain, but when they appeared on the European market, they were seen as indistinguishable from other caffeine drugs and cola red.

MEDICAL USE
Kola has a stimulating effect on human consciousness. In short, it can be used in a state of weakness. It can also be used for diarrhea caused by stress. It can also help with mild depression and may even lead to a state of euphoria in some people. Because it contains caffeine, kola nut can relieve migraines or headaches. The phenols and anthrocynin also act as an antioxidant.
Historical uses of kola nut also include increasing the capacity for physical exertion and for enduring fatigue without food; to stimulate a weak heart and treat nervous weakness, weakness, lack of emotions, tension diarrhea, depression, despondency, worry, anxiety and seasickness.
